Gujarat to Expand Drone Pilot Training Across 19 ITIs
Key Highlights
- 19 Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) in Gujarat will receive drone pilot training.
- Government-run institute Kaushalya – The Skill University (KSU) is the anchor institution for this initiative.
- 504 individuals have already received official pilot licenses.
- Over 100 drones have been developed and assembled.
- 17 more ITIs are in the pipeline for DGCA recognition.
A Unique Educational Model
The School of Drones at KSU has developed a unique educational model known as “Drone Mantra”. This model integrates advanced training in drone manufacturing, programming, and operations using state-of-the-art machinery and simulation labs. The curriculum is supported by partnerships with leading technology firms, providing students with exposure to real-world industrial applications. The School of Drones has also developed a curriculum that addresses the following areas:
- Drone Manufacturing
- Drone Programming
- Drone Operations
- Drone Maintenance
These areas are covered in the curriculum through a combination of theoretical and practical training.
Partnerships and Collaborations
KSU has partnered with leading technology firms to offer students exposure to real-world industrial applications. These partnerships are designed to support the curriculum and provide students with practical training in industries such as:
- Agriculture
- Logistics
- Defence
- Infrastructure Monitoring
These partnerships also support the development of a self-sufficient drone ecosystem in Gujarat.
Expansion Plans
The expansion of drone pilot training is part of a broader state-supported rollout under the direction of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Labour and Employment Minister Balvantsinh Rajput. Two ITIs — Bilimora and Mandvi — have already secured DGCA recognition to operate as RPTOs. The remaining 17 ITIs are in the pipeline for DGCA recognition.
| ITI | Location | DGCA Recognition |
|---|---|---|
| Bilimora | Bilimora | Yes |
| Mandvi | Mandvi | Yes |
| Shilaj, Ahmedabad | Shilaj, Ahmedabad | No |
Benefits of Expansion
The expansion of drone pilot training is designed to prepare the youth of Gujarat for high-demand roles in the evolving economy. The state’s proactive investments in training and certification are expected to support the growth of the drone industry, which is projected to reach Rs1.21 billion by 2030.
“This isn’t just about flying drones. This is about integrating a generation of workers into the future of work, where automation, data, and intelligent machines will drive industry,”
said a senior official in the labour department. “By localising both production and talent development, Gujarat aims to reduce dependence on imports while boosting innovation and employment.”
Key Statistics
- 504 individuals have received official pilot licenses.
- Over 100 drones have been developed and assembled.
- 1,000 candidates have been trained in drone assembly and manufacturing.
Conclusion
Gujarat’s proactive investments in drone pilot training and certification are expected to support the growth of the drone industry. By localising both production and talent development, the state aims to reduce dependence on imports and boost innovation and employment. As the drone industry continues to evolve, Gujarat is well-positioned to play a leading role in India’s emerging drone ecosystem.
