What Thopter is
Thopter is an independent, advertising-supported site about drones — buying them, flying them, and running the numbers behind both. There’s no account to make and nothing behind a paywall: the tools and guides are free, and the ads on the page are what pay for keeping them online.
Who it’s for
The site covers the same ground the tagline promises — reviews and buying guides, FPV and aerial imaging, flight technique, and the tools every pilot needs — so it’s written for hobbyists picking a first quadcopter, FPV pilots tuning a rig, and mapping or aerial-photo operators planning a mission, not any one of those groups exclusively.
The tools
Six calculators sit at the center of the site. The Drone Flight Time Calculator and Battery Charge Time Calculator work out how long a pack lasts and how long it takes to fill back up. The LiPo Voltage Calculator turns cell count into the voltages your charger should show. The Drone Range Calculator and Drone Coverage Calculator turn cruise speed and flight time into a distance or an area you can plan a mission around. The Ground Sampling Distance Calculator works out what a mapping camera actually resolves on the ground.
How they work
Every tool takes numbers you already have — battery capacity and current draw, cell count, cruise speed, sensor width and altitude — and runs a plain, published formula against them. Nothing is saved, nothing is sent anywhere, and there’s no hidden model behind the result.
Where the numbers come from
Flight time and charge time follow standard capacity-and-current-draw arithmetic with a sensible usable-charge margin built in. LiPo voltages follow each cell’s well-documented nominal, full-charge, and storage figures. Ground sampling distance follows the standard sensor-width, altitude, and focal-length relationship used in photogrammetry. None of it is proprietary — it’s the same math a pilot could run by hand, just faster.
The Drone Museum
Past the tools, the Drone Museumwalks through the aircraft types, components, and milestones that shaped the hobby, from early quadcopters to modern aerial imaging. Every entry, image, and fact is drawn from Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons — it’s reference reading, not a sales pitch.
What this isn’t
Thopter isn’t affiliated with any drone manufacturer, aviation authority, or standards body it mentions. Every calculator result is an estimate built from whatever numbers you type in — it is general information, not professional aviation, legal, or safety advice. Always check your local drone regulations, registration rules, and airspace restrictions, and follow your own manufacturer’s guidance before you fly.
