About Thopter
Our Mission
Thopter was founded with a simple yet powerful mission: to help drone pilots everywhere make smarter decisions, through approachable guidance and free tools that make estimating flight time and range, planning a shoot, checking your field of view, and matching a drone to the job clearer, more rewarding, and more practical.
We believe that everyone who flies or dreams of flying, from first-time hobbyists to seasoned commercial operators, deserves access to accurate tools, comprehensive resources, and trustworthy guidance. Our platform bridges the gap between confusing specs and confident, well-informed decisions about consumer and commercial drones, FPV and racing, quadcopters and aerial photography, buying and maintaining, and flying responsibly.
Through our free collection of tools, we help pilots make informed decisions about flight time and range, coverage and photo-mapping missions, field of view, payload, and the numbers that matter before takeoff. Every tool is designed with real-world applicability in mind, tested against the day-to-day realities of planning, flying, and filming with a drone, and continuously improved based on user feedback. To go deeper, explore our Drone Museum, with galleries on the pioneers of flight, the rise of the quadcopter, FPV and racing, and the aerial imaging that changed how we see the world.
Our Story
Thopter emerged from a need we experienced firsthand. While trying to sort through conflicting advice and scattered spec sheets, we noticed a common challenge: the lack of accessible, accurate tools for the everyday decisions that come with choosing a drone, planning a flight, and getting the most out of every shoot.
Good flying relies heavily on curiosity and a little know-how, which are invaluable. However, a confident pilot also benefits from clear answers about how long a battery will last, how far a drone can safely fly, how much ground a mapping mission will cover, what a lens will actually capture, and what the rules allow. We saw an opportunity to combine well-researched drone knowledge with modern tools to help people make confident decisions about every flight.
Our team began developing tools that we wished existed when we flew our first drones. Each calculator and guide was created to solve real problems encountered when planning a shoot, comparing airframes, or prepping a mission. We tested every tool against real-world numbers, refined the logic based on feedback, and ensured that the results reflected current, widely accepted flight-planning practice.
Today, Thopter serves active users worldwide, from first-time hobbyists to lifelong aerial enthusiasts. Our tools have helped people estimate flight time and range, plan coverage, check field of view and payload, and make more deliberate, confident decisions about their drones.

Our team includes experienced pilots, builders, writers, and reviewers who bring years of combined experience to tool development. We regularly consult industry references and trusted experts to ensure our content reflects current best practices. Our content is general informational and educational content, NOT professional aviation, legal, or safety advice; results vary — always verify local drone regulations, registration requirements, airspace restrictions, and manufacturer guidance with official sources before you fly.
Looking Forward
The future of drones lies in the intelligent combination of curiosity and proven know-how with modern tools and clear knowledge. At Thopter, we’re committed to staying at the forefront of this evolution.
Our development roadmap includes expanded tools for flight planning, range estimating, mission mapping, and gear comparison. We’re also working on multilingual support to serve the global community of pilots better, and developing specialized guidance for different drone types, missions, and ways of flying them more deliberately.
Most importantly, we remain committed to keeping our tools free and accessible. As we grow, we’ll continue to prioritize user needs, ensuring that everyone has access to practical drone tools regardless of their budget.
